I don’t think I have ever commented on this blog before as regards Free State Black Writing, and the fact that I am doing so now illustrates my profound respect and affection for the man I always call “icon” - Mr Qoopane. I am happy to see this here. We’ve been through a lot over the years, ne? But it’s okay. I know you have always been wary of “young-comers” (like the Pule Lechesa’s), thinking about the “long journeys” of the past. How can one forget? But I am not going to go down memory lane - you have already done that in books like “Adventures in Journalism”. Suffice it to say that few people can love literature or the world of writing like you Flaxman; you have a wonderful library at home (once shown on SABC!); and of course you also have HUNDREDS of literary articles (in papers and magazines) kept over the decades. You have always been eclectic in taste hence you have kept pieces on the Ngugis, Peter Abrahams, Ellen Khuzwayos, Achebes, Es’kias, Omotosos, etc etc…there is only one Flaxman Qoopane!

[…] Kindly indulge me as I briefly thank others who have contributed indelibly to my being here today. My father, SL Bolaji, who instilled an abiding love for literacy and literature in me from infancy; sundry authors worldwide - too numerous to be mentioned here who shaped my work; Free State writers like Mr Pule Lechesa, Mr Flaxman Qoopane and Mr Tila who have always been good friends. Mr - Oom Johan Botha, of Drufoma Publishers, who has over the years been my main Publisher; Ms Jacomien Schimper of the Free State Provincial Library service who has always been excited about grassroots literature; Prof Margaret Raftery for her initial help and interest; Mr Aryan Kaganof and his memorable, exhilarating blogs; and I must repeat that I remain permanently indebted to Prof Engela Pretorius, Prof De Klerk and others that I do not even know about.
