ok i have to tell you
this looks GREAT for a south african band
its on par with american and british stuff i’ve seen… is this their epk ?
cause it would be great for one :)
Back to Basics :) i love that place
my boyfriends band played there a lot :) :)
    enormous monkey penis, hahaha.
this is great… captures their personality…
this guitar line is great :) :) i love it… these shots of them on stage are great too, they remind me of hardcore logo a bit, and of this documentary i saw called american hardcore, about harcore punk in the states in the 80s. i love the shots :) :)
this is amaaazing. amaaazing. :) i love it :)

cool bass! reminded me a bit of the 24-hour party people style initially. I like it: straightforward, rugged, idiosyncratic. Like that effect near the end of the song where the cuts are in tune with the music.

the look of the video suits their sound bru! great name for a song. raw. and I dug the psychedelic treatment of the guitar at around 3:20.

and the collapse at the end. things like that always appeal to me

Sent it round to a coupla learned musos and the feedback was positive! I will definitely be looking out for EMP

    yes i’m ok thank you
    your first rock video rocks
it’s something between a short rockumentary
    and a long videoclip
i like the action in the basementlike room best
    and the black&white stuff
    the band is awesome
    best

I like the video, it looks and feels, and they sound quite similar to the Black Lips - do you know them? Fucking mental US band that are touring right now. They’re on Vice records and i know they like to tour odd places (they’ll be in Uganda soon) so if you’re into that kind of thing, check them out i’m pretty sure they’ll play SA. They’re on Vice Records - the thing that made me think of them was the lead singers side burns and the fisheye lens, or whatever you call it.

    the singer is HOT too!!!
love the video - would only cut one shot of him introducing the next song…is called….
i’d cut from …’” fucking A it would be an honor” to the next shot in the rehearsal room
this is the only moment it feels a bit thin … like it’s in a empty venue ….
the rest is VERY FAT! / VET!
dug the sound quality and had a good chuckle
    cool shit man

i like your video - especially the falling around and the epilepsy-inducing screen flashing, but these clowns have no style. do musicians not realize that we can hear AND see them? and what’s with the lambchop sideburns and the ‘natas’ koki scrawl? no man. tell ‘em to check out andrew W.K. for some prime rock & roll style. he looks the part and he sounds it too.

    Dear Aryan,

Good to hear from you! I have to tell you, I am always glad to be on your mailinglist. I keep track of your adventures and can’t help but being amazed by the range, productivity and intriguing authorial mysteries of what you are doing. This clip was a surprise again: new genre in the Kaganof catalogue but old style, pure sixties trashrock images, including fish-eye lens, gritty off-stage scenes, ubercool singer and the trashing of the drumkit. And a good song with great dirty guitar work, by the way.
    All the best
    Chris

    Hi

Been a hectic couple of days and only just now got round to watching your video, which I think is great! Very Kerkhovian – or Kaganovian - but with a clear beginning, middle and end which you know I like. No seriously, great energy and not at all boring and lots of happy falling about. Only lesser aspect was the sound quality but that could have been my computer or the effect of internet. Is this a new more commercial direction? If so, great.

I’ve been watching this BBC series of the seven ages of rock – loads of old footage and tracing the historical development of punk, metal and such-like – love it. Also Jimi Hendrix and next week David Bowie and Talking Heads. Makes you realise that public success is really a matter of serendipity rather than anything one can plan. Only problem with the BBC is that they have these INCREDIBLY boring old men talking in HORRIBLY pretentious language. But the music’s great to see.

All the best for now and loads of love, Lizzy xxxxxxxxxxx

    hey

its very rock ‘n roll. retro ramons aethetics, half-thoughts, joburg, first dates and tongue-knotted kisses, digressions and the occasional drugs/drinking.
mostly i like that its really fun! definitely kicked my ass into getting away from the machine and onto the dance floor which is just what girl needs at the start of a fucking freezing rainy weekend in ct.
    thank you!!

    hi I/A

i watched the the video of course, do not know what to say…techinically and emotionally it is flabbergasting as usual, but don’t know enough about the scene to form an (accurate) opinion….was a bit surprised with the text “my first video”, is it really?

furthermore : as you know, i love your work, took the SMS book to my Class (am now DTP studying for vormgeving’) as an examle, and often show it to people….positive reactions=99,999%.

so, what to say? Dunno. Doesn’t really matter, does it?

    Hey Aryan:

Sorry for the delay and the brevity, am on a residency in croatia.
Overall I think it’s a good video — I like the music, the kind of spotlight aesthetic. A few moments felt a bit forced, but there again, not sure how to get out of that in such a short video!!! Hope you get to do more - I bet you’d do some rocking ones…. best,

EMP’ They are incredible, great song, I really dig them.
The energy, the voice, the first time you played it when I was at your place.
As a music video it works, reminds me of my band Dexter in Adam.
We also used to fall over each other..
    I like the un-styled environment,
The in camera vignetting is very pretty.
Overall the grading works well for the track.
I am now learning to grade in the new FCP grading app ‘Color’ it would have been great to grade it in that.
The interface and its effectiveness is just like the high end shit like DaVinci and Lustre.
    You’ll like it.

    hey aryan,

just want to send you a quick note– more detail later b/c it’s late here.

on the emp– the more i watch this video, the more i smile. haven’t figured it out– a bit of sound garden, a bit of sonic youth, a bit of really good friends, lyrics that don’t seem to go over 6 words
(haven’t counted yet), and then what seems to be a few advert plugs.
the perfect corporate video, but then it’s not. not at all. and that’s
    why it makes me smile.

simply, if there’s one place i love as much as detroit– it’s south
africa. the news i get warms my heart.

    word is bond,

    scott

    re EMP video…
i don’t know if i REALLY like the band that much!
the vocals are pretty boring - grunge hangover… soundgarden. alice in chains. foo fighters. etc. like sooo many other SA bands. i’m sure they will be very popular though. they are really good at it.

your video works well with the track - all chiaroscuro fisheye grime. and i like the high contrast colour, lens flare etc. kinda psychedelic. although the song itself doesn’t entirely hold up to this. pretty pedestrian lyrical concept.
vocalist is pretty. you have homed in on this. i think he should look directly at the camera more. for create rapport; show off his gore-jizz eyes more etc. that is, if he wants legions of screaming girls’ adulation (who wouldn’t?).

i like the scream at the end a lot.

    i could go on.

my main crit is probably that it’s WAY too long.
should be like 3.30 to 4.00 MAX.
esp don’t like the intro context blurb.
    why is it there?
seems kinda pointless. even if it is to establish them as a “garage band” or something, they sound like diffident dorks.
just the announcement of the track would be good.
althoughhhh… if they get big, people will probably love the mucking-around parts.
    hmm.
i still reckon you should do a shorter edit too.

    Hi Brother,

I just watch your video I liked the ending very much and fisheye shots of course. The normal shots become a little after having the funky shots. Overall very good. I sorry to react so late I was in the jungle for 10 days shooting for varese with the bolex. How are you? I’m flying today to Teheran.

    love you my brother

It might not suit everybody, but I like your documentary-style
approach. I suspect you’ve put more work into editing the video than
they did into writing lyrics and music and choreographing their stage
act. Maybe I’m just prejudiced. I like Radiohead, remember.

the rock video is cool. I especially like the before and after and the circular wide angle. for a moment I thought that you had sat inside a washing machine filming while four dwarves carried it around the set.

  29. ABRAXAS Says:

got this reaction from nicole rouillard

EMP: I liked the fish bowl effect, the parts that have heightened colour, and the black and white. I like the editing sequence, it follows the music well. I think that there are perhaps too many effects, like the rainbow one and the one that distorts the clarity. Also, I don’t think that it’s that nec. to include the shots of the names of the equipment unless you think that they can get some sort of sponsoring out of it.
Then the video: I like some of the narrative but I think that it would be more beneficial to those guys if they are held in a cloud of rock mystery. Off the stage, they are just a bunch of guys trying to make a band, trying to figure out who they are and that makes them too real. If its just about the stage performance then they start to become untouchable, something worshipable, something that everyone else wants to be.
And that whole bit about the satan thing on Paul’s arm is lame, it’s so ‘misunderstood’, and I think that discredits him cause he’s actually a really sensitive guy.

    Hello!

About your video: It’s quite ok I guess, but I like the last few scenes best to be honest. To me it’s kind of old-fashioned. Also: Why didn’t you let them play in another surrounding? White wall is a bit boring (projections on it would have been better in my opinion)
I think you are an intelligent ánd talented filmmaker so I hope you’re not mad at me for being honest with you.

I am terribly tired and will have to get up early tomorrow to go to Rotterdam to rehears with two orchestras and a violin player for our performance at the Midzomer Zaan festival this Saturday..

    Lot’s of Love,

  32. kagablog: great art daily » Trois clips récents de Aryan Kaganof 2004-2007 Says:

How we learned to stop worrying and love Mandela”. […]
