Camilla Ha’s early experience as a butoh dancer influences much of her soundscapes; sometimes minimal, at other times disconcertingly abrasive. She uses her voice much the same way a butoh dancer would use their body-distorting it grotesquely, sometimes beautifully. Her latest album, Wrath, is being released by Somnimage Records in a limited edition of 300 vinyl with hand-screened covers.

MAGIC IS KUNTMASTER—–REVIEW OF NIGHTSONGS FOR UGLY CHILDREN
Calling a band Magic is Kuntmaster implies a desire for attention and mainstream rejection alike. Camilla Ha, former vocalist for weird Chicago group My Name is Rar Rar, plays the contradiction to its sometimes scary conclusion in her new guise: Magic is Kuntmaster’s new Nightsongs for Ugly Children to frightening extremes, adding lazer blast noises and creepy vocals to a buzzing undercarriage.

Magic is Kuntmaster is an abomination. How else can you explain (a song about) the pediophiliac musings of a dead German whore who murders her thirteen-year-old pimp in a jealous rage? Or a woman who falls in love with her stalker? These are just a couple characters who haunt the songs of Magic is Kuntmaster (aka Camilla Ha). She has created an astonishing fucked up alter reality and has recently been developing a well-deserved reputation for her spectacular anarchic performances.

MAGIC IS KUNTMASTER—REVIEW OF VIRGIN GHOST
Remember that time Camilla Ha threw a highball at those guys playing pool at the Leadway? No? How bout the time at Buddy when she assaulted Jan Van den Dobblesteen with a folding chair? Or the Labtronica when she physically assaulted the IRA? Given the anger, aggression and violence that has come to be synonymous with her live performances, it’s ironic to hear the sounds of chirping birds and chimes on her new album. Ironic, though not unwelcome. What fewer people know is that Ha also performs butoh, a glacially paced traditional form of Japanese dance. This influence is evident on “Virgin Ghost,” which runs the gamut of sounds from low-pitched drones to high-pitched tweets… There’s a whole chorus of strange voices, all of them mispitched and flanged to high heaven. Though occasionally the atmospheric treats rub shoulders with harsh bursts of static, this album is more about space and movement than it is about rage.
