on my recent journey from kwazulu natal to cape town, passing through
the small towns of the transkei and eastern cape, i couldn’t help but
notice the prominence of funeral services and burial societies. i
didn’t go looking for any of the buildings in these photographs - all
were on the main roads through which i passed. compared to the general
dilapidation of many of the surrounding premises, buildings housing
funerary services were in a better state of repair - obviously
thriving. these buildings are chilling reminders of the impact of the
quiet tragedy going on behind closed doors in this deceptively
peaceful countryside. how the fuck can the scale of the hiv/aids
epidemic continue to be ignored when people are dying, every day, in
numbers so great?

as crass as it may sound,
and as unfortunate as the situation may be,
one man’s loss is another man’s gain.
