Ja, this was taken during the Joburg Carnival in 2005. It was actually taken indoors, at the launch, in one of those old railway warehouses under the freeway in Newtown. The carnival has great potential, but, as in Newtown itself, the processes of beaurocracy hamstring the arts. For instance, rents are high in Newtown … making it difficult for places like Xarra Books to survive ..
