Songs from Lineage
For every kingdom that falls,
a million more will sprout from the ground
Each burdened with the responsibility
of leaving their mark on the earth
For every life that’s lost
a million more brave the birth canal,
With talents clinched in each fist
not knowing what destiny holds
And I descendant of a tribe whose truth
dances with the easterly winds
Whose identity eroded with the Kalahari sand storm
But I, like many of my lineage carry the whispers of history
as melodies in the heart
As songs of fortune ruffle my soul’s feathers
Leaving me singing wisdom I barely understand.
But for the sake of those whose genes shape me
Whose bloodline fuels the life force I am
I sing these ancient chants,
and echo memories of my past
to my future
The beautiful myth
and legends that I call my culture
Immortalised as
drums,
voices,
dancing feet,
clapping hands
And a belief that
every rising sun brings with it
a new melody
