i got shivers there, entirely *because* i am not patriotic, c! it was incredible that something like this could be commissioned. the plaque with the rationale explained that the entire thing was supposed to represent graphically (that is, as a 3-d graph) the contributions of various “races” (dutch, german etc) to the development of afrikaans. the monumentality, the immovability of the entire structure ensconced there on top of a hill with a 360 degree command of the surrounding countryside was so terribly tangible as a metaphor for the implacable world view which gave rise to it.
