a note from nimi hoffmann
I was trying to reply with the truth. I was saying that the character
in your story was as alienated from others, from himself, as the
character in mine. There’s this hardcore thread of anarchism and
dispossession in a lot of your stories. But I was also asking you: are
you thinking hard enough about what you’re saying? It’s easy to put
down on paper an ‘I don’t give a fuck what you think, fuck you’, but
what happens to a person who really sees the world that way? The kind
of hurt that such a person suffers, it seems to me, is absent from
your story. What kind of world does this character live in such that
he feels this way? What kind of world do we live in, such that we can
write this way?
