My memories of the future are vague
And getting vaguer
If I forget what’s going to happen tomorrow
Tomorrow might never happen
The films I have already made are dead to me.
Only the films I have yet to make are of interest.
Hence my archive of images is an archive of images that will spawn new films in the future.
I took this photo in Joburg about 6 years ago. There is a movie there. A feature film. I might not write the script myself. It certainly won’t be in the English language. I might not even direct the film. Might only produce it. But it is a film that needs to be made. An urgent film. It is a film about the great deception called the “New South Africa”, the hoax of “post-apartheid”. But is also a film about survival, about the neccesity of getting by. It is a film about masks and why we in this country all still wear them. Perhaps I don’t need to make this film, perhaps it is being made already by younger, more savvy film-makers than I. I call this film
