Very good docu, Quicktime format with great picture and sound. Interesting to see a part of the world I likely won’t get to visit. Need some more “Dutch guys” in Jo’burg!

Just to avoid any confusion, this is NOT the short film that was created by Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9. His short film is similarly named, “Alive in Joburg”, and is only 6 minutes long, and is available here: (url removed)

Don’t download this if that’s all you’re after. Don’t make my mistake! I thought there would be prawns here and there were none. Serves me right for not reading the description. :P

Only one year to go. I can’t see a World Cup being held in South Africa. Much like London 2012 it will be a total desaster.

Weird seeing the place like this. We cannot blame the boer or murungu for the state of the place, its down to us Africans.

I just got home from the cinema after watching District 9, so this seemed like a funny coincidence.

Thanks for keeping this at the top, I would’ve missed it otherwise. Egoli’s an alright place, not the safest maybe, but neither’s Rio. I hear downtown’s on its way back up again, and the World Cup will help, glad the greatest show on earth will be in my old home town.

I heard there are more dangerous places :( (not sure of the names) Skidrow? and Compton? in Los Angeles, Poughkeepsie? in New York, a district near Paris in France, Napoli in Italy…

If I had to guess you are probably as useless as your last comment, and have a IQ less than a Baby Prawn.

I feel terrible that I am actually commenting on your post, but thought F it, it will make my day.

Joburg aint that bad if you street smart, smart enough to not go mess around in area’s that you should not be in.

Documentaries always paint a bad picture because they are focusing on life in the city, not on the normal people living and working around the city.

Joburg aint no Dubai but I can tell you every city has it slums and dirty under belly.

I have just started downloading this and thank the uploader, the director, actor and every other person involved with this project!Should be an eye opener to the masses.People say things are exaggerated when it comes to Joburg-I say ********! I’ve lived there for a year and was attacked at 5pm by an “individual”. Shame really. But thanks again Uploader!

And I just read what Truthstar said:Brilliant. I live in Dubai and then moved to Jozi for training. You see, one can avoid the areas but then the criminals don’t confine themselves to a particular place.

Ghanaman: Mugged in Oslo? Of course you can.. Oslo is the capital of Norway, and also the largest city in the country. But I’ve been to Oslo many times in my life, and I’ve never worried about getting mugged or beaten up by some random criminal. Norway in general is a very safe country to live in, if you compare with other countries. I’m not saying that Oslo is completely safe, but no one goes around worrying about crime there.

0206.jpg

31.Posted by Seether13 on Oct 10 2009 at 08:21

I haven’t watched this yet, but i am 34 yo and lived in jhb my whole life. I have never been even in an attempted mugging or anything alike. You just need to be streetwise.

0207.jpg

32.Posted by masturgrater on Oct 10 2009 at 08:43

@Gremke, if you don’t have Quicktime (free) installed, then get VLC player for free from videolan.org

It plays virtually EVERY video format.

I live in JHB. Just last night there were 2 hi-jackings down the road from me, literally like 400m from my house. The neighbourhood watch told me this when I heard sounds in the garden and called them. One of their team was shot multiple times during an attempted house robbery AND THEN I saw this morning that there were a newly painted green stripe painted on the pavement outside my house. This is an indicator for the armed robbers to attack you and to say you have no weapons (green=safe), they are mistaken and I don’t care about blowing them to hell. I could list 100’s of stories from people that I personally know and those aren’t good stats.

This was all in 1 night so yes, be street smart but don’t think that it’s enough, I have also had a gun pointed at my head for my car and been chased a couple of times. If you want to be safe, try living on a different continent.

Never lived in Jo’burg but I have visited, its certainly not a safe place for sure. Having been to several other countries I can say for sure South Africa was by far the most dangerous. Not hard to get dead there at all but almost worth it for the beautiful scenery in other areas of the country, and of course the worlds best beef ****y.

it all depends where you stay in Johannesburg some areas are better, but Johannesburg is still very unsafe.

This video only portrays the (CBD)Central Bussiness Distric, and Bertrams..if you know Joburg, then you will know this video is a lot of cr_p,crime in Joburg and the rest of SA is out fo control(fact of life).

So to all the street wise comments(fact is you dont leave your houses at nite)sh_t scared..
To truthstar.***`s not chana,it`s china.***reet wise punk..
God help the poor football fans(foreign)i`m sure they will never venture back into Africa again, after the World Cup,SA will never see a tourist on it`s shores again..And it`s not Joburg.***`s Johannesburg..my chana :.)

No worries if it hasn’t :)

42.Posted by Seether13 on Oct 11 2009 at 09:24

jackta, maybe you sit in your house whole night, but that is you. Nobody i know are scared to go out at night. “Streetwise” means you don’t go to the CBD at night, it means you go to all the nice places that are much safer than the CBD. You can basically take any main cities worldwide and there is slums and very unsafe areas. It is not unique to Jhb.

Fact is crime is out of control, but not to the point that i am scared at all to live in my beautiful country.

0233.jpg

Not as bad as everyone says it is….. blah

@23 james bongg I agree, this documentary was not made well at all, could have been very interesting, I had to turn it off too, I agree wiht @46 and @47 much better documentary by louis theron who works for the bbc, very well made much more interesting, and shows real corruption, and the extreme circumstances of its resident. If you took the time to watch this, you must watch the other one, you won’t believe the difference.

name one major city in the world which claims the freedom of its people but struggles with managing the free will of man.
Johannesburg is colorful but real place. It does not hide it’s belly yet allows you feel the warmth of a golden city.

Holland Doc op Ned 2: Stayin’ Alive In Jo’burg - Rob Schröder, VPRO, 22 sept. 2009
